Now, first of all, I know there is a Res 3 and 2.3.1 is a little outdated, but Res 3 isn't done according to the author and I happen to like 2.3.1 a lot better.  I don't like looking at lists of things, I like to see them.  I like the windows, no the little indents.  Overall, put as many things new in as you want for v3, just don't change the interface.  Thats my thoughts.  So, in this article you will be forced to use ResEdit 2.3.1.  Well, maybe not, but it didn't hurt to try heh?

  8. Okay, now I'll show you a few tricks you can use with ResEdit (which just happens to be included).  Some of these tricks ca be very dangerous or harmful to the ol' puter.  So what do I recommend?  Try these on someone elses computer.  No, really, be careful.

  10. First off, ALWAYS, work on a carbon copy.  Never work on the actual real program, unless you really know your shit, but I'm guessing that if you're reading this, you probably don't.

This is the one thats kinda sorta dangerous.  So watch out.  Take any app and open it with ResEdit's "Get file/folder info" under "File".  Change the TYPE to FNDR and the CREATOR to MACS.  Save it and take the REAL Finder application and throw it in another folder.  Now, take the app you just changed and rename it "Finder" without quotes.  Put it in the System Folder and go back to the REAL Finder and copy the icon and paste it to the FAKE Finder.  Restart the puter and the app that you just changed will be the only app you can run.  This is deadly!

You can also use CREATORS to hide items or make them unusable to others.  Take the item you want to hide and open it with "Get file/folder info".  Change the TYPE to INIT and the CREATOR to MACS.  When someone double clicks on it, they'll get a message that says its a system extention and to use it place it in the extentions folder.  You have to change it when you want to use it though.  Watch out though, your item may end up in the extentions folder from someone who wondered to much.

Open the dialog or alert resources of any app and change the OK and CANCEL buttons around so they are opposite, or change them to say something like, "Delete HD" or "Erase all files".  Then change the words above the buttons to say something like, "All files on the drive "My HD" have corrupted and must be deleted and reformated".  This will get every novice user.

You can also just change the icons or add pictures.  All you do is make a new resource in the PICT or CICN resources, change its resource ID to something easy like 10001.  Then go to the DLOG or ALRT and drag a picture or icon onto the window.  Then put in the proper ID and it will display the new picture or icon.  I like taking a screenshot of an OK button and a CANCEL button.  Then put those overtop the real buttons.  Then the user spends hours trying to click OK or CANCEL.  Then they think its froze so they restart.  Try it, its mean.

Heh, this one kinda sucks but it still gets em'.  Okay open the MENU of a word processor or a graphics program.  Switch the Save and Save As around with Print and Page Setup or whatever.  Also, if you're like me, you like to use shortcuts.  Make the 'New's shortcut key Q and make the 'Quit's shortcut key N.  Everytime they time APPLE-N it quits on them.  Have fun with this one.

  30. Well, this resource isn't really fun, it usually contains text for alerts or menus or whatnot.  But, sometimes you can find passwords or registration codes in this part.  Look around, see what you can see.

Well, this one uses all the techniques mentioned above.  It sucks and takes a while but I made 60 bucks off this.  Take any shareware or freeware game or small app and open up all the resources and change them so they are customized different from the original.  Change the pics and icons and everything, including the versions.  Save it all and distibute it to little kids or even go as far as to package it and sell it to local stores.  Put it on the internet and give the crap about if you like it please send 10 bucks to support me.  I did one and sold 3 copies to my friends, they thought I was a genius.  I managed two copies to a local "Computer Zone".  They are still on the shelves though.  And 1 person off the internet actually gave me the shareware fee.  I didn't think people did that anymore.

  36. Well, these are only a few tips and tricks for ResEdit.  You can really do tons more but I personally don't want to write a 40 page thing on Res.  Also if you have a trick for Res, send it to me and I'll publish it.
